Christ will be master of the heart, and sin must be mortified. If your life is unholy, then your heart is unchanged, and you are an unsaved person. The Savior will sanctify His people, renew them, give them a hatred of sin, and a love of holiness. The grace that does not make a man better than others is a worthless counterfeit. Christ saves His people, not IN their sins, but FROM their sins. Without holiness, no man shall see the Lord. ~ Charles H. Spurgeon
I cannot even count on my hands the number of times I’ve had someone tell me he is a Christian while at the same time claiming to never read the Bible or pray or even think about God very often. Such “cultural Christians” in my experience tend to show a deep affection for the world and its ways, even to the extent of scoffing at biblical truth or mocking God’s standards. If you live like the world but claim to be a Christian, and the above quote doesn’t give you pause, consider what God Himself has to say:
- 1 John 2:15: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
- Matthew 7:21: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
- Philippians 2:12: Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
- 2 Corinthians 13:5: Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
