John Brown of Haddington’s List of Errors

Luther Menchton Pomeranus und CrucigerThe Crown of Christ has graciously posted all 185 of John Brown of Haddington’s List of Errors in the post Toxic Theology.  As I read through the list, these are the errors that I most frequently encounter amongst those with whom I interact:

5. Only the words of the Bible can prove religious points – logical inferences from the Bible are invalid. 2 Timothy 3:16, Romans 15:14, John 5:39, Matthew 22:23-33, Galatians chapters 3&4, Hebrews chapters 1-10.

6. As long as people love and obey God, their precise theology doesn’t matter.  Doctrinal orthodoxy doesn’t really matter. John 17:3, 22:31, Galatians 1:8, 2 John 9, Hebrews 11:6, 6:2, 1 Corinthians 2:2, 3:11.

12. Some Books of the Bible have been lost.  Matthew 5:18, Luke 16:17, 24:27, Romans 15:4.

13. The Old Testament doesn’t apply today.  Luke 16:29, Ephesians 2:20, Romans 15:4, 2 Timothy 3:15-17, John 5:39, Acts 17:11

15. The original Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament have been corrupted down through the years.  1 Peter 1:25, Psalm 12:6&7, 138:2, Matthew 5:18, John 5:39

18. The Bible is not a perfect and complete guide to morality and religion.  2 Timothy 3:15-17, John 5:39, 20:31, Revelation 22:18, Proverb 30:6

24. No Bible teaching must be believed if human reason rejects it.  1 Corinthians 1:21-24, 2:14, 1 Timothy 3:16, Ephesians 5:32, Matthew 13:11

25. You can understand the Bible and be saved without Holy Spirit’s work. 1 Corinthians 2:14, Psalm 119:18, Ephesians 1:17&18, 3:14-19

36. Just vengeance is not part of God’s nature; he can forgive sin without demanding any payment. Genesis 18:25, 2 Thessalonians 1:6, Romans 3:24-26, Exodus 34:7, Habbakuk 1:13, Psalm 5:5, 11:5&6, Hebrews 2:10

38. The doctrine of the Trinity is not vital; adult believers can be saved without believing in the Trinity. John 17:3, 14:1, 5:23, 1 John 2:23, 2 John 9

44. The Holy Ghost is not a Divine Person; he (it) is an angel or a force. John 15:26, 14:26, Acts 5:3, Isaiah 6:9 with Acts 28:25, 2 Corinthians 13:14, Matthew 28:19, 9:38 with Acts 20:28

52. Since nobody’s election is certain until he perseveres & dies in Christ, it is impossible to know if you are saved.  Romans 8:28-39, John 10:27-29, 2 Corinthians 13:5, 1 Corinthians 2:12, 1 Thessalonians 1:4, 2 Peter 1:10, Psalm 73:24-26, 2 Timothy 4:7

53. No particular persons are “reprobated” – damned to eternal ruin by God’s wise & soveriegn will.  Such a God would be cruel.  Romans 9:22, Jude 4, 1 Thessalonians 5:9, John 10:26, Isaiah 46:10 with 2 Thessalonians 1:8&9, Psalm 9:17

54. God planned to have Christ die for all people, and to call everyone to become Christians.  We are being tested to see if we will accept God’s offer. Romans 9:11-22, 1 Thessalonians 5:9, 1 Peter 2:8, John 10:10&11,26

57. God controls events, but only in a general and indeterminate way. Proverb 16:1, Acts 17:28, Colossians 1:17, Philippians 2:13, 1 Corinthians 12:6

71. Christ’s righteousness is not the condition of God’s mercy – it is our faith, repentence and obedience that merit God’s mercy.  Romans 5:17-19, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Isaiah 53:10-12, Psalm 40:6-8

72. The covenant of grace is made with all men and offered to every single man. Psalm 147:19&20, Ephesians 2:12, Proverb 29:18

105. God’s saving grace is not invincible; men can refuse it. God’s grace is called “effectual” only because it suits the human personality, but not because it is irresistable and almighty in itself. 1 Corinthians 2:14 and 4:7 and 3:6&7, Romans 5:6,  8:7&8, John 6:44, Ephesians 2:1,3,10, 1:18-20, Ezekiel 11:19&20, 36:26&27

140. It is ok to lie if you help someone without hurting anyone. Psalm 5:6, Proverb 16:17-19, Ephesians 4:25, Colossians 3:9
